Banaras Tabla

Summer Tabla Intensive with Sanju Sahai

Gharana means a family tradition. Up until only recently, a family of musicians produced young players trained by elder family members. Repertoire and technique was passed down verbally from father to son and from guru to disciple in the intimacy of a family setting. The Banaras gharana, like the five recognized gharanas (Delhi, Punjabi, Lucknow, Ajarara and Farrukhabad), has its distinctive technique and repertoire, otherwise known as a baj or style. An accomplished member of the Banaras gharana may be capable of playing several styles.
